The Document Display Name is where you can define how your document appears in the document list of your Prismic Dashboard. This field can be easily populated and edited in the top bar of your document editing screen.

How is this field initially populated?

The content of this field is automatically set 1 of 2 ways:

1. By the first heading typed into the document. If there is none, then it will use the first paragraph or Key Text field that it finds.

2. By the "useAsTitle" : true configuration. This configuration done in the Custom Type of a document and is most often used with UID, Rich Text, and Key Text fields, but also works with the Date, Timestamp, Color, Number, Select, and Embed fields. Below is an example of how to use this on a title field:

"title" : {
"type" : "Text",
"config" : {
"label" : "Document Title",
"useAsTitle" : true
}
}

How do I update the Prismic Document Display Name?

You can edit this value by adding a new one in the Display Name input at the top of the page. Once you click 'Save' this field will be set. It will unlink this field from any default values from other fields in your document which may have auto-populated it. Now you will only be able to change the Document Display Name from this input.
